Students Learn Fractions In 'Pedro's Cafe'

Mr. Sorbera's Math 7 Classroom was recently transformed into "Pedro's Cafe" for an authentic learning experience. The culmination of the lesson on percentages was a simulated restaurant activity where students had to calculate tax, tip and discounts.

Students played the roles of customers who were out to dinner and servers who took and delivered orders. They were all expected to calculate their total bills, including tax and an appropriate tip (10-15-20% depending on quality of service) and some tables were given discount coupons (10% off) that were to be subtracted from their bills. By the end of class, students had demonstrated a thorough understanding of percentages.
