Dear CCSD Families,

Happy New Year! This week our school community will be focusing on the Positivity Project character strength of Optimism. Optimism means you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.

Optimism represents a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future-oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. Despite setbacks, they keep a positive attitude and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieving their goals.

Optimism is not about wearing rose-colored glasses and rolling over when the going gets tough. It’s about staying focused on the good in any situation -- allowing you to be aware of opportunities and accountable for your emotions. Optimists are strong leaders. They find meaning in hardship and can create a vision for the future. Optimists are inspiring; their example is contagious. And, by sharing and achieving their vision -- despite setbacks -- they help us all achieve more.

To practice and encourage the character strength of optimism with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Have a wonderful week! We look forward to welcoming our students and staff back tomorrow, January 2nd!

Thank you to our CHS counseling team for facilitating workshops for our 8th and 10th graders on the outside programs available to our high school students before break. Students learned about the Early College Career Academy available through SUNY ADK and HVCC, P-Tech, New Visions, International Baccalaureate and our many opportunities for Career and Technical Education programs. Our students had great questions and were excited to be exploring future career and educational opportunities!

It was a fabulous night on the court for our Girls Varsity Riverhawks BB team! Here are some highlights from Coach Hoertkorn:
"The Varsity girls basketball team picked up a league win over Luzerne last night to improve to 4-0 in the league and 6-1 overall heading into the holiday break. It was a bit of a slow start, but the girls continued to work and made the adjustments to get back on track.
Emily Dingmon was huge for us all game, but especially in the first quarter when things weren't going our way and Luzerne had a chance to get a big lead. She led all scorers with 24 points to go with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
Caitlyn Crossman had another great game as well battling inside against a physical Luzerne team. She recorded 4 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. She led the top of our press and forced Luzerne into trap and turnover positions.
Whitney Cameron had some foul trouble in the first half, but stepped up big for us in the second half recording 12 of her 15 points. She also had 4 rebounds. Taylor Stone always shows her toughness inside, not letting anyone play more physically. She had 4 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Riley Dumas worked hard on both ends of the floor, and had some great assists to her teammates who were cutting for an open shot. She also had 3 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
I continue to be so proud of how hard the girls are working to improve. Every player on the team is working on the little things to help the team be successful."

Congratulations Riverhawks!!! Keep up the great work!

Our JV boys had a great win last night! Here are some highlights from Coach Bowe:

"The JV boys basketball team had a big 60-26 win vs. Hadley Luzerne. The boys played a great team game on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. They competed until the last buzzer sounded. Ashton Wright led the way with 18 points and 5 steals. After that we had 5 other guys with 5 points or more. Our half court trap was outstanding. We forced 12 steals.
Coach Bowe is very proud of the progress we have made since the start of the season. We have a lot of good basketball ahead of us. Thank you to all the fans that got there early to support us. It was an electric crowd and the boys appreciated all the support!!"
Way to go, gentlemen!!! Keep up the great work!

Our CHS Counseling Department facilitated a field trip to the "Women in Trades" event recently! The event highlighted the need for women in the trades and the many opportunities in our region for young women who want to pursue contruction and other trades-related fields. They listened to guest speakers, asked questions and experienced hands on activities.

Some of our Elementary Student Council Members spent part of their monthly meeting creating cards for children at St. Jude's Hospital, a leading hospital that specializes in childhood cancer and diseases. All of the additional cards will be collected and mailed at the end of this week.
This kind act is following the fundraiser and donation that was made to The Ronald MacDonald House in order to assist families. We have wonderful plans for the next few months that will support our own community as well. We will choose kindness and practice it through showing that other people matter.🧡🖤
Great job modeling our Positivity Project, Riverhawks!!

The Second Grade team had the wonderful opportunity to bring our students to a performance of “Clara and The Land of The Sweets,” an excerpt and retelling of the Nutcracker. It was the first time in a theater for many of our students.
Following the performance, students enjoyed fresh air in Crandall Park, ate lunch at Aviation Mall and bumped into Santa Claus on the way back to the bus! What a great day!
